Volunteering with JA Company Program
JA Company Program teaches high school students about business, entrepreneurship, and economics by having them create, market, and operate their own company. Students sell stock to raise capital, elect officers, buy materials, market their product or service, pay a dividend to stockholders, and liquidate their company. By organizing and operating an actual business, students learn to understand and appreciate the responsibilities each individual has in running a business.
Students from across JA’s three-state area showcase their companies at a regional competition. The top team receives a scholarship and the opportunity to apply to
compete at the JA USA Company of the Year Competition in Washington, D.C.
A group of 1 to 5 volunteers are assigned to a JA Company Program team of students to deliver at least six of the 12 lessons. The teacher is present during all lessons. The remaining lessons are delivered by the teacher.
- Assist teacher in delivering at least six of 12 total lessons
- Each lesson is 90 to 120 minutes in length
- Lessons can occur during the school day or as part of an after-school club
JA Company Program lessons are delivered at the school.
JA provides all the training and materials you’ll need to be prepared, including an overview of the curriculum, training on classroom management, guidance on partnering with the classroom teacher, and tips for effective student communication.
JA Company Program is part of JA’s high school curriculum. Students are in 9th through 12th grade. Class size varies depending on the school, ranging from 8 to 30 students.
